It seems that all too often now the evening weatherperson tells us about another severe weather event heading our way, so, it’s no surprise that SUDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) have become more important to our environment.

As population has increased and permeable (natural) surfaces have slowly been replaced by hard and paved surfaces. SUDs (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) have been introduced to alleviate flooding and environmental risks by simulating natural drainage. They use a variety of systems to control increased flow levels and manage a slower release of surface water back into the environment; these systems can include collection, storage and cleaning of flood water.

From 1 October 2008, the Government introduced changes to the law stating that the hard surfacing of more than five square metres of domestic front gardens would only be considered a permitted development if the surface in question was rendered using a permeable solution, serving to restrict the use of non-permeable mater.

  • Your driveway is less than five square metres: If your driveway is below five square metres in size you don’t need planning permission.
  • Your driveway is more than five square metres and you would like to use concrete or another non-permeable solution: Yes, you will need to apply for planning permission by filling in an application form, drawing (to scale) plans and paying a fee of £150. Your application will be considered by your local authority and in normal circumstances you should have a decision approximately 8 weeks from submission.
  • Your driveway is more than five square metres and you would like to use a permeable solution: No, you should not normally require planning permission.
